The renovated clinic with its over 110-year history has been part of Swiss Medical Network since 2010.

With around 388 doctors, Privatklinik Bethanien offers its patients an extensive range of medical services, from internal examination and diagnosis to surgery and on to rehabilitation in the clinic’s own physiotherapy department. We offer comprehensive and integrated all-round care with the focus on first-class quality of medical treatment, provided in a personal and individual approach in comfortable surroundings.

Specially trained interdisciplinary teams of doctors and nursing staff remain on duty around the clock so patients can receive care at any time. Some 4,040 surgical procedures are carried out in the clinic and around 700 babies are born every year in the family department. Founded in 1912, Privatklinik Bethanien offers 110 beds in tastefully decorated private and semiprivate rooms, junior suites and suites that meet the highest standards. It is a member of the Swiss Leading Hospitals and complies with ISO 9001:2015 quality management standards. To carry these certificates of quality, the clinic undergoes regular stringent testing according to high quality criteria. Privatklinik Bethanien is proud to be part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Day clinic

Our 13-bed day clinic and recovery ward provide dedicated care for outpatients and inpatients. Highly trained nurses, continuously advancing their expertise across diverse specialties, ensure optimal recovery.

Monitoring, typically lasting one to four hours depending on the procedure, ensures patients are pain-free, awake, and have stable circulation before being transferred or discharged.

Robot-assisted surgery for minimally invasive procedures

At Privatklinik Bethanien, we use advanced Da Vinci® robots for very precise surgeries, aiming for the highest results.

Interdisciplinary Team
The Da Vinci® robot performs surgeries with small incisions for abdominal organs, chest, and urinary/genital systems. Da Vinci® Bethanien Hospital Team is very experienced and works closely together. It's led by Dr. Daniel Christen (Medical Director and Head of Surgery), along with specialists in urology and thoracic surgery.

Quality Assurance
Access to the Da Vinci® Surgical System is decided by the Da Vinci® Bethanien Team based on strict quality rules. Permissions for surgeries and assistance are regularly checked and reviewed by our expert team to make sure procedures are of high quality.

How it Works
The Da Vinci® robot-assisted surgical system is a high-tech helper that lets surgeons operate more accurately and safely. During a Da Vinci® operation, the surgeon controls instruments with joystick-like handles and sees a 3D image, up to ten times larger. These tiny instruments can move in all directions, allowing the surgeon to work in places a human hand couldn't reach.

Benefits for Patients
For patients, surgery with the Da Vinci® robot means the minimally invasive procedure needs only small cuts, greatly reducing pain after the operation. Hospital stay might also be shorter for some procedures. This approach helps you recover faster and more comfortably.

VELYS™ Roboter

As of early 2025, Privatklinik Bethanien has integrated the VELYS™ robot into its advanced robot-assisted surgical capabilities. This state-of-the-art robotic system empowers surgeons to achieve exceptionally precise incisions and enables even more accurate adaptation of implants to each patient's unique anatomy.

How it works
Leveraging a high-speed camera, hydrophobic reflectors, and advanced motion technology, the VELYS™ robot delivers real-time images without requiring computed tomography. This innovative approach enables the surgeon to execute remarkably precise and consistently controlled movements.

Papillon technology

Since February 2022, Privatklinik Bethanien has uniquely operated a Papillon 50 device, significantly expanding its radio-oncology services for intestinal cancer. To this day, it remains the sole facility in Switzerland offering this advanced technology. Papillon technology presents a well-established, non-surgical alternative for patients with early-stage rectal cancer located in the final segment of the digestive system.

How it Works
The Papillon technique involves precisely positioning a radiotherapy applicator in direct contact with the tumor. This enables the highly targeted delivery of a very high radiation dose directly to the affected area.

SONATA method

Since May 2023, Privatklinik Bethanien has been a pioneer in offering the SONATA method for uterine fibroid treatment. This minimally invasive technique enables the resolution of benign uterine tumors without incisions and with significantly reduced stress for the patient. The SONATA method stands as an innovative choice over traditional surgical procedures, proving particularly beneficial for women grappling with symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, or an unfulfilled desire to have children.

How it Works
The SONATA method fuses intrauterine ultrasound with targeted radiofrequency ablation. A probe precisely locates fibroids via cervix, treating them with controlled heat for shrinkage. This quick, outpatient procedure is done under anesthesia.

Special Cardiology

In the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, Bethanien Clinic Team conducts both diagnostic and interventional procedures. A fine plastic catheter is precisely guided from either the groin artery or the wrist, navigating its way to the heart. With the aid of X-ray images and contrast media, Bethanien’s cardiologists clearly identify constrictions or blockages in the coronary arteries, which are then promptly treated by expanding them with a catheter balloon and, when necessary, placing a stent.
