Birth Giving in Switzerland
When you need to arrive to Switzerland
You must arrive to the country on time. You need to be in Switzerland before your 36th week of pregnancy if you plan to travel by air. For medical reasons, some airlines impose restrictions on flights of pregnant women after the specified period.

At the initial appointment, you should take the results of tests performed earlier, so that the doctor prescribes additional studies if necessary.

Swiss maternity hospitals also offer full pregnancy management starting at 12 weeks. In addition to routine examinations, women receive consultations from therapists, ophthalmologists and other doctors. Gynecologists conduct genetic screening at the request of the woman in labor. Switzerland is a world leader in genetics and DNA analysis.
First Contact with your Baby
Regardless of the way the baby is born, the baby is immediately placed on the mother's breast. The first contact with your baby is very important as it strengthens the bond between mother and child. Further, the woman in labor is told and shown how to properly hold and swaddle the newborn, teach the rules of breastfeeding.
Birth Certificate
The birth certificate is issued by the registry office at the place of birth of the child. The administration of maternity hospitals will need the following documents for further submission to the registry office:

  • Application for the birth of a child with a mandatory indication of the name (filled in legibly, signed by the father and mother)
  • Parents' birth certificates.
  • Confirmation of registration at the place of residence.
  • Marriage certificate / certificate of marriage or acknowledgment of paternity (if parents are not married).
  • Valid passports of parents.
The submitted documents must be issued no earlier than six months ago and must be notarized. Depending on the citizenship of the parents, the list of required documents may vary slightly from case to case.

If all documents are correct, the registry office will register your child and you will receive an (international) birth certificate.
Giving Birth in Switzerland Citizenship
Switzerland does not grant citizenship and residence permits to children born in the country. A child acquires Swiss citizenship only if his parents are in an officially registered marriage, and at least one of them is a citizen of this country.

To obtain the citizenship of your country, before leaving Switzerland, you must come to your Embassy with a birth certificate of the child, passports and photographs of the parents. You will also need a marriage certificate and an application, which is filled out on the spot.
Home Return
As a rule, during natural childbirth, a woman stays in the clinic for 3 days, in the case of a caesarean section, this period increases to 5-7 days. Further, after examining the mother, the child and talking with the doctor about the safety of the flight, you can be discharged from the hospital and return home from Switzerland. Normaly, we advise to stay in Switzerland for 1 month after giving a birth.

Childbirth in Switzerland Prices

The cost of birth delivery in Switzerland starts from 21 000 CHF, cesarean section can go up to 47 000 CHF, Price depends on the city, hospital and the wishes of the woman in labor.
